Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) is a versatile thermoplastic resin supplied as a fine white powder, produced by the reaction of polyvinyl alcohol with butyraldehyde. It is prized across industries for its exceptional combination of strong adhesion, optical clarity, flexibility, and film-forming properties — all in one material.

PVB B03HX is a low-viscosity grade well suited to coatings, inks, and adhesive formulations where solubility and film performance are key. It dissolves readily in alcohols, ketones, and esters, and is highly compatible with a wide range of plasticizers and resins including phenolic, epoxy, and alkyd systems. The resulting films offer excellent toughness, gloss, abrasion resistance, and good water and oil resistance.

Typical applications include wash primers, metal and wood coatings, printing inks (including food packaging inks, as pure PVB is non-toxic), foil and vacuum metallisation coatings, ceramic binders, and adhesives for glass, metal, plastic, and leather substrates. It can also be cross-linked with thermosetting resins to boost chemical, solvent, and water resistance where durability demands are higher.

Recommended usage rates for PVB B03HX vary depending on the application and solvent system. In coatings and primers, PVB resin is typically used at 10–30% of the total formulation, while ink formulations often call for lower loadings of around 5–15%. In adhesive applications, concentrations will depend on the substrate and desired bond strength, and are commonly used in combination with plasticisers to achieve the required flexibility and tack.
