Hexapeptide-9 — 1000ppm solution

Hexapeptide-9 is a signal peptide supplied pre-diluted at 1000ppm in a water and glycerin base, ready to blend straight into the water phase. First introduced to cosmetic science in 2010, it is a second-generation collagen-signalling peptide that acts through a pathway distinct from the palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 family, so the two are complementary rather than redundant when combined in the same formula.

Mechanism: Hexapeptide-9 binds to receptors on dermal fibroblasts and is reported to be associated with the production of Type I and Type III collagen, the two structural collagens linked to skin firmness, thickness and resistance to mechanical stress. In cosmetic use it is formulated into products targeting the appearance of fine lines and loss of firmness in mature skin.

How to use

• Use level: 3–7% of your total formula. This refers to the solution as supplied.
• Add to the water phase at cool-down, once your mixture is below 40°C.
• Formulate at pH 4.5–7.5.
• Water-soluble — no special solubilisation required.
• Do not apply neat to the skin — this is a formulation additive. Always blend into a serum, gel or cream and patch test the finished formula.

Formulating with it

No colour, no significant odour and no impact on product texture. It combines with Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 for a multi-pathway collagen approach, and with Copper Tripeptide-1 (GHK-Cu) where a copper peptide is also wanted in the same product.

Particularly well suited to firming serums, neck and décolletage treatments, eye creams, and products targeting the appearance of elasticity and structural volume in mature skin.
