Erythrulose is a naturally derived ketose sugar used as a self-tanning active, produced by aerobic fermentation from plant sources. It reacts with amino acids in the skin's surface layer via the Maillard reaction to form brown pigments, giving a natural-looking tan without sun exposure.
Erythrulose is most commonly used alongside DHA: it develops more slowly than DHA (giving a gradual, streak-free colour), helps avoid the orange tones DHA alone can produce, and leaves skin feeling less dry. Colour typically lasts 2-10 days depending on use level.
