Cholesterol 95% NF is a high-purity sterol supplied as an off-white coarse powder. It is one of the three key lipid classes of the skin's barrier, alongside ceramides and free fatty acids, and is used to build barrier-identical lipid systems in creams, lotions, balms and serums.

Function in formulation:

• Barrier lipid – pairs with ceramides and fatty acids to form lamellar, skin-identical lipid structures
• Emollient and skin-conditioning agent – adds richness and cushion to emulsions
• Co-emulsifier and emulsion stabiliser – improves the stability and texture of W/O and O/W systems
• Improves the incorporation and stability of ceramides in a formula

Typical use level: 0.5 – 2%; up to 5% in barrier-repair balms. For a classic barrier lipid ratio, combine ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids at roughly 3 : 1 : 1.

How to use: Oil-soluble and insoluble in water. Add to the oil phase and heat until fully melted and clear before emulsifying (melting point approx. 145 – 150 °C, so pre-dissolve in hot oils or esters for best results).

Applications: barrier creams, moisturisers, ceramide serums and emulsions, eye creams, lip balms, hand and body care, haircare conditioners.
