Bakuchiol Serum
Bakuchiol is a natural, plant-derived cosmetic active widely used as a gentle alternative to retinol. Extracted from the Babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia), it offers anti-ageing, antioxidant and soothing benefits — helping to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve the look of skin firmness — without the irritation, dryness or sun sensitivity associated with traditional retinoids.
Supplied pre-diluted and ready to blend into your own serums, creams and lotions.
Also known as
Plant-based retinol · Babchi extract · Natural retinol alternative
Key benefits
- Supports the skin's natural collagen production
- Softens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Improves the look of skin elasticity and firmness
- Helps balance sebum and minimise the appearance of pores
- Antioxidant and soothing activity
Suitability
Gentle enough for all skin types, including sensitive and blemish-prone skin. Unlike retinol, bakuchiol does not increase photosensitivity, so it can be used in both day and night formulations.
How to use
- Add late, and keep it cool. Incorporate at the cool-down stage of your formulation. Bakuchiol tolerates warmth but prolonged heat should be avoided — do not exceed 75°C, and keep any heating as brief as possible.
- Watch your pH. If your formula contains water, keep the finished pH below 6.5. A range of 3.5–6.5 is ideal.
- Use a chelator. Adding disodium EDTA at 0.1%, or phytic acid, helps protect the bakuchiol from trace metal ions and extends the stability of your finished product.
- Preserve it. Any water-containing formula needs a broad-spectrum preservative.
- Always patch test the finished product before regular use.
Pairs well with
The collagen-stimulating peptides — Hexapeptide-9, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 and the Matrixyl family — and with antioxidants such as ferulic acid, vitamin E and resveratrol. Bakuchiol can also be used alongside retinol, where it acts synergistically and helps stabilise it.
