Bakuchiol is a plant-derived cosmetic active, widely used as a gentle alternative to retinol. Extracted from the Babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia).

Formulated for all skin types, including sensitive and blemish-prone, without the irritation, dryness or sun sensitivity associated with traditional retinoids.

Suitability Unlike retinol, bakuchiol does not increase photosensitivity, so it can be used in both day and night formulations.

How to use

• Phase and temperature. Incorporate at the cool-down stage of your formulation. Bakuchiol tolerates warmth but prolonged heat should be avoided — do not exceed 75°C, and keep any heating as brief as possible.
• pH. If your formula contains water, keep the finished pH below 6.5. A range of 3.5–6.5 is ideal.
• Chelation. Adding disodium EDTA at 0.1%, or phytic acid, helps protect the bakuchiol from trace metal ions and extends the stability of your finished product.
• Preservation. Any water-containing formula needs a broad-spectrum preservative.
• Always patch test the finished product before regular use.

Pairs well with

The palmitoyl and hexapeptide actives — Hexapeptide-9 and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 among them — and with antioxidants such as ferulic acid, vitamin E and resveratrol. Bakuchiol can also be used alongside retinol, where it acts synergistically and helps stabilise it.
