Witch Hazel is an alcoholic extract of the Hamamelis tree, usually extracted from the leaves, flowers and bark. It is used in formulations as an astringent and toning agent. In a formulation it contributes a cooling sensory effect and an astringent skin feel. It is an alcoholic extract, so allow for its alcohol content in the solvent load of your formula. Commonly formulated into toners, tonics, facial cleansers, and after shave lotions and gels, and into formulations targeting the look of oily or congested skin.
