Tara gum is a natural galactomannan polysaccharide derived from the seeds of Caesalpinia spinosa, a leguminous shrub native to Peru. Chemically it sits between guar gum and locust bean gum in terms of its mannose-to-galactose ratio (approximately 3:1), which gives it a unique rheological profile that makes it particularly useful in formulation. It is approved as a food additive (E417) and is increasingly adopted in cosmetics as a clean-label, naturally derived alternative to synthetic thickeners and stabilisers.

In cosmetics, tara gum functions primarily as a rheology modifier and thickener, building viscosity efficiently at relatively low use levels — typically 0.1–0.5% in aqueous systems. It produces smooth, non-sticky, slightly elastic gels with good shear-thinning behaviour, meaning products flow easily on application but recover viscosity once spread on skin. This gives finished formulations an elegant, non-draggy skin feel that is difficult to achieve with many other natural gums. It is fully cold-dispersible in some grades, though hydration is generally faster and more complete with gentle heating to 60–80°C.

One of tara gum's distinguishing features in cosmetic formulation is its excellent compatibility with electrolytes and a broad range of active ingredients. Unlike carbomers, it does not require neutralisation and is tolerant of high salt concentrations, making it well suited to micellar waters, toners, and formulations containing electrolyte-heavy actives. It works synergistically with xanthan gum — the two together give significantly more structured, stable gels than either alone — and also combines well with hyaluronic acid and other biopolymers. This synergy means formulators can use lower combined levels of both gums while still achieving good viscosity and stability.

Typical cosmetic applications include leave-on and rinse-off skin care (particularly lightweight gels, serums, and micellar cleansers), hair care (conditioning gels, styling products, and scalp treatments), and natural/organic formulations where it can replace or reduce synthetic carbomer, HPMC, or PEG-based thickeners.
