Stearic Acid (INCI: Stearic Acid), octadecanoic acid - a saturated C18 fatty acid. Used across food, personal care and industrial applications as an emollient, consistency factor, hardener and lubricant. Common uses include:

• Soaps & Shampoos: Esters of stearic acid produce pearly effect in soaps and shampoos

• Skincare: an emollient and consistency factor in creams and lotions; soaps of stearic acid can be used as emulsifiers

• Detergents: quaternary alkylammonium derivatives are used in the manufacture of detergents and antistatic agents

• Softening: Stearate salts of zinc, calcium, lead etc are used in softening PVC.

• In Tyres: Used as release agents in manufacturing of tyres

• Textile: Stearic acid with castor oil is used in textile sizing

• Fireworks: used to coat metal powder, limiting oxidation so the composition can be stored for a long time

• Candies:Used with sugar or corn syrup as hardener in candies
