Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) has many uses from food to personal care products. Common uses include:
Cleaners: Used in "Spray and Wipe" formulations, liquid hard surface cleaners and liquid dishwashing products.
Detergents: Used as builder agent in detergents such as dishwash and laundry powders
Chelating agent: Binds up hard water compounds such as calcium and magnesium
Food Substances: Used as preservative for sea food, meats, poultry and animal feeds
Ceramics: Used in ceramics to increase viscosity of glazes used in ceramics
Leather Tanning: Used as masking agent in leather tanning
Other Uses: Used in flame retardants, paper, anticorrosion pigments, textiles, rubber manufacturers, fermentation etc
Safety Information
It is very acutely toxic. It is mildly alkaline hence are moderately irritating to skin. Environment - It may cause Eutrophication in fresh water as it contains phosphor.
