Sodium silicate, also known as water glass, has many uses, including:
- Refractory linings: It is used as a binder of the sand when doing sand casting of all common metals. It allows for the rapid production of a strong mold or core
- Construction: Used in adhesives for bonding paper, corrugated boxes, glass, porcelain, leather, textiles, and stoneware. It's also used as a chemical grouting material, especially when drilling permeable formations.
- Detergents: Used in dishwasher and laundry detergents to soften hard water, prevent corrosion, and improve the durability of detergent granules.
- Water treatment: Used in wastewater treatment plants as an iron flocculant and an alum coagulant. NSF certifies it for use in drinking water treatment.
- Paper industry: Used as a deinking agent.
- Automotive repair: Used to seal leaks in head gaskets.
- Food preservation: Used in food preservation, homebrewing, and aquaculture.
- Hand-dyeing: Used as a fixative in hand-dyeing.
- Pottery: Used in pottery.
- Pulp and paper industry: Used as a transition metal ion chelate, a pH buffer, a stabilizer, a surface active agent and penetrant, and as a corrosion control agent.
- Magic crystal garden toys: Used in the 1980's to create magic crystal garden toys.
