In food manufacture it is used as an acidulant and pH adjuster - in products such as cheese, fats and shortenings - and in the beverage industry, particularly cola-type soft drinks.

Phosphoric acid (also known as orthophosphoric acid; INCI: Phosphoric Acid) is a mineral acid, most commonly supplied as an 85% solution in water. Phosphoric acid 85% is colourless, odourless, and non-volatile. The 85% solution is a viscous syrupy liquid.

Like most mineral acids, Phosphoric acid is corrosive and must be handled carefully, with eye and skin protection used.

Common uses include;

Fertilisers Manufacture of phosphate fertilisers like Super Phosphate

Rust removal Dissolves and sequesters iron compounds

Cleaning products Acid cleansers, grill and oven cleaners, sequetrants

Water treatment - reduces corrosion of pipework, limits the deposit of limescale and helps control the pH of water
