Oxalic Acid is a versatile acid that can be used to control Varroa mite in beehives using the vapourisation technique. It can also be dissolved in sugar syrup at 3.2%. It is safe to use when the Honey flow is on, and does not affect honey .
Also useful in cleaning products, as a stain remover, and sequestrant for metals. It can be useful for bleaching timber, cleaning timber decks and lifting metal stains. Oxalic acid is also a reducing agent and its base, known as oxalate is a chelating agent for metallic ions like Calcium, Magnesium and Iron. Oxalic acid can be used to bleach wood, removing black stains caused by water penetration.
Oxalic acid's main applications include cleaning or bleaching, especially for the removal of rust (iron complexing agent). Its utility in rust removal agents is due to its forming a stable, water-soluble salt with ferric iron (ferrioxalate ion). Oxalic acid is an ingredient in some tooth whitening products. About 25% of globally produced oxalic acid is used as a dye mordant. It is also used in bleaches, especially for timber, cork, straw, cane, feathers, and for rust removal and other cleaning, in baking powder, and as a third reagent in silica analysis instruments.
***CAUTION - Oxalic Acid is toxic at high doses and should not be ingested, or have prolonged skin contact.
