Laponite XLG Mineral Gelling Agent

LAPONITE-XLG (INCI: Sodium Magnesium Silicate) is a synthetic silicate gelling and suspending agent, suitable for use in formulations with a pH value of 6.5 and lower. In water or aqueous solutions of alcohols, it swells to clear and colorless colloidal dispersions, leading to the formation of a gel structure. At concentrations above 2% in water, strongly thixotropic gels are formed.  That thixotropy improves the skin feel of personal care products and gives a light, non-sticky texture. It also raises the stability of emulsions and holds particles, pigments and solid actives in suspension, limiting settling. It is also effective for stabilizing oil-in-water emulsions and is compatible with solutions of up to 40% ethanol. When used in combination with co-thickeners, it can be added to formulations containing > 60% ethanol.

Also very useful for Conservation processes, for example in the conservation of stone, metals, organic materials, ceramics and paintings.  Use of Laponite to remove old water soluble adhesives (such as animal glue or paste) and to soften ingrained dirt to facilitate its removal from stone and ceramics. pH 9.8 at 2% suspension. Gel forms at 2% concentration.

Can also be used to create a matt finish to acrylic paints.
