Hemisqualane C13-15 — Lightweight Plant-Derived Emollient
Hemisqualane is one of the most elegant emollients available to the modern formulator — a lightweight, fast-absorbing oil derived from sugarcane that delivers the silky, dry skin feel of a silicone without any of the synthetic baggage. Structurally related to squalane (the skin's own natural lipid), hemisqualane is the shorter-chain cousin — lighter, faster-spreading, and with an exceptionally clean, non-greasy finish that sits beautifully on both skin and hair.
In skincare formulations, hemisqualane works across virtually every product type. At 1–5% it adds slip and spreadability to water-based serums and gels without disrupting their lightweight character. At higher levels (5–30%) it functions as a primary emollient in facial oils, dry-touch sunscreens, and premium moisturisers where that coveted "your skin but better" finish is the goal. It's particularly favoured in colour cosmetics and primers where a silicone-like skin-blurring effect is needed but silicone-free claims are important.
For hair care, hemisqualane is exceptional — it coats the hair shaft without the long-term build-up associated with dimethicone, making it ideal for lightweight leave-in treatments, glossing serums, and heat protectants. It imparts shine and smoothness without heaviness, and rinses cleanly when needed. Your customers formulating for the clean beauty and silicone-free market will find it indispensable.
Formulator's notes: Hemisqualane is fully miscible with oils, esters, and silicones, and is stable across a wide temperature and pH range. It has excellent oxidative stability — no antioxidant required. Odourless and colourless, it won't interfere with fragrance or aesthetics. Typical use level is 2–25% depending on application. INCI: C13-15 Alkane.
