Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil is one of nature's richest plant sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) — an omega-6 fatty acid that the body uses to regulate inflammation, support skin barrier function, and maintain hormonal balance. Cold-pressed from the seeds of Oenothera biennis, 8–10% GLA, making it a genuinely functional ingredient rather than just a carrier oil.

In skincare formulations, EPO is a go-to active for formulators targeting dry, sensitive, or compromised skin conditions — eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and mature skin all respond well. It absorbs readily without heaviness, making it suitable for serums, facial oils, and targeted treatment balms. It works beautifully blended with rosehip, sea buckthorn, or borage oil for an omega-rich repair complex.

In food and nutraceutical applications, EPO is widely used in softgel and liquid supplement formulations targeting hormonal health, PMS, menopause support, and joint inflammation. It's also increasingly appearing in functional food formats — blended into wellness shots, omega supplement oils, and condition-specific nutrition products.

Formulator's tip: EPO oxidises faster than more saturated carrier oils, so include a mixed tocopherol antioxidant blend at 0.1–0.5% to protect shelf life in finished products. Store bulk oil cool, dark, and sealed — it will thank you for it.
