Ectoin - Skin protectant and microbiome shield
INCI: Ectoin. Ectoin is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative — a compatible solute, or osmolyte. Originally isolated from extremophile bacteria living in the harsh, salt-saturated conditions of desert lakes, where the organism produces it to shield its cellular structures from osmotic and thermal stress. In formulation it works by binding and ordering water into a structured hydration shell around proteins, cell membranes and DNA, physically buffering them against environmental stressors including pollution, blue light and temperature extremes. It is well studied for its effect on transepidermal water loss and on the stability of the skin microbiome, and is used in formulations targeting hydration, barrier support, skin comfort and the appearance of redness in reactive or sensitised skin. It is water soluble — add to the water phase — pH stable, and compatible with most cosmetic systems. Use levels typically range from 0.5–2.0% in leave-on formulations. Ectoin is Ecocert and COSMOS approved. Add it to serums, moisturisers, eye creams and any product where skin resilience and deep hydration are the formulation goal. For larger volume requirements or ongoing supply arrangements for production use, please get in touch directly at leah@thesourcery.co.nz — we're happy to discuss pricing and availability for your specific needs.
