DMAE — 50% solution (as bitartrate)

DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) is a long-established firming and tightening active, often described as giving a "lift" to the skin. It works by increasing the contractile capacity of epidermal cells, producing a noticeable tightening effect, and also acts as an antioxidant. It is a naturally occurring compound, found in small amounts in the brain and in oily fish such as salmon.

Supplied as a 50% aqueous solution of the bitartrate salt, ready to blend into water-based formulations.

How to use

  • Use level: 1–10%, with 3% recommended.
  • Do not exceed 5% without testing. Above 5% DMAE can irritate the skin and leaves an unpleasantly tacky feel on the surface.
  • Add in the final step of your formulation, once the mixture is below 40°C.
  • Not recommended for thin, fragile or sensitive skin.
  • Do not apply neat to the skin — this is a formulation additive. Always blend into a serum, gel or cream and patch test the finished formula.

What to expect

DMAE gives a firming, tightening sensation that builds with continued use — typically noticeable after around ten days of consistent daily application. The effect is a surface one rather than a structural change, so it works best alongside collagen-supporting peptides rather than in place of them.

Supplied as a cosmetic raw ingredient for external use in formulation only. Product information is provided for general reference and does not constitute medical or therapeutic advice.
