Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a colourless, water-soluble triose sugar and the primary active ingredient in sunless self-tanning products. It reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of skin (the Maillard reaction) to form brown melanoidin-like compounds, producing a temporary tanned appearance without UV exposure.
DHA is FDA-recognised as safe for cosmetic use on the skin and is combined with erythrulose in many formulations for a more even, longer-lasting tan. The tan typically develops within 2-4 hours and darkens further over 24-72 hours before fading naturally with skin cell turnover.
